National Coalition Mourns Loss of HBCU Advocate George Cooper

The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation and Black Women's Roundtable joins those who mourn the passing of Dr. George Cooper. Our nation & historically black colleges and universities have lost a true servant leader and champion in the passing of Dr. Cooper.

Cooper , who was the Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), spent a lifetime pursuing collegiate opportunities for African Americans. His service to HBCU's included serving as a university professor at Alabama A&M University, Tuskegee University and as President of South Carolina State University. He also matriculated at FAMU and Tuskegee University.

"Dr. Cooper was a true advocate for those who care about the key role minority-serving institutions serve in providing quality higher education for African Americans and other minorities,” said Melanie Campbell, President & CEO of NCBCP.

"We lift up our prayers and condolences to his family in their loss. We thank you for sharing Dr. Cooper with HBCU's, the higher education community at large, the nation and the world," Campbell added.

In recent years, Dr. Cooper participated in The National Coalition's Gathering of Black Men Initiative, a project of Black Youth Vote, where he shared his insight and mentorship by encouraging young Black men and seasoned Black men who were ex-offenders, on the importance of education to pursue their dreams at any age and stage in life.

The National Coalition, founded in 1976, creates and enlightens communities by building institutional capacity that provides and develops leadership. By educating, motivating, organizing, and mobilizing Black communities, the National Coalition seeks to encourage full participation in a barrier-free democratic process. The National Coalition works to expand, strengthen, and empower communities to make voting and civic participation a cultural responsibility and tradition. Black Youth Vote! (BYV!) is a national grassroots coalition of organizations and individuals committed to increasing political and civic engagement among black youth and young adults between the ages of 18-35.
