Texas Coalition on Black Civic Participation

The Texas Coalition, successfully led by Carmen Watkins and Blake Green, registered more than 4,000 people in for the Unity '08 Campaign. Focusing on the Houston area, Texas Black Youth Vote! hosted a voter registration concert with rap music star T.I., registering 1,100 people to vote. Also a radio personality, Ms. Watkins leaders made many media appearances with Black Youth Vote! leaders, including a 5-day voter registration radio marathon with Radio One. During the 2008 Primary election, Texas Black Youth Vote! and students at Prairie View A&M University protested the removal of their on-campus polling location by marching 7.2 miles to the new poll location to vote on the first day of early voting in February 2008. Students waited in line 9 hours to vote on 2 voting machines.
