Cynthia Downs-Taylor led the Virginia Coalition's Unity '08 campaign, targeting Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Richmond. In addition, Black Youth Vote! VA was led by Coordinator Kemba Smith, reaching more than 600 young people through their voter empowerment outreach efforts. With its 1,300 volunteers, the Virginia Unity ’08 Campaign distributed more than 30,000 pieces of voter education and GOTV literature. In partnership with the Baptist General Convention, which includes 1100 member churches, the Virginia Coalition registered more than 4,500 voters. Sponsoring a press conference to announce their Election Protection program, the Virginia Coalition gained coverage in several newspapers regarding their voter education, registration and GOTV efforts.
