Georgia Coalition on Black Civic Participation

Based in Atlanta, the CPA is active throughout the state of Georgia, and works to support and establish state coalitions in the Southeast states of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky. Led by Helen Butler, the Georgia Unity ’08 effort registered 25,000 people, largely due to their presence in Atlanta and the out-lying areas of Savannah, Columbus and Augusta. With strong media outreach, the Coalition appeared weekly on radio stations V103 and WAOK to answer questions and encourage voter registration and participation during the Early Vote period. Engaging and mobilizing the youth demographic, BYV Coordinator Helen Butler held a voter registration training event with R&B superstar Usher, which was attended by over 800 youth. Coalition efforts were enhanced by leveraging the Voter History Database to help facilitate phone banking and canvassing throughout the targeted areas. Election Day activities included providing rides to the polls to seniors and canvassing in low turnout precincts with the Clark Atlanta University Street Team. The Coalition also helped lead Election Protection in Georgia.
